What This Calculator Does

This calculator computes the periodic road tax liability for Fire Fighting Vehicles, Fire Tenders, Mobile Road Water Sprinklers, and their drawing trailer units operating in the State of Kerala under Schedule I, Item 9 of the Kerala Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, 1976.

Tax assessment is strictly based on the registered Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW / Laden Weight) recorded in the vehicle registration certificate. While state-operated emergency fleets may receive specific gazette notifications, commercial industrial units, private facility responders, and airport fleets maintain regular quarterly taxation under Item 9.

Statutory Rate Matrix (Schedule I, Item 9)

Calculation Methodology & Heavy Vehicle Excess Formula

Step 1 — Verify Weight & Classification: Extract the registered Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) from the vehicle's registration certificate. Determine if the assessed vehicle is a self-propelled motor vehicle or a drawing trailer pump.

Step 2 — Base Rate Lookup: For vehicles up to 9,000 kg, identify the matched statutory bracket from the Schedule I Item 9 rate schedule.

Step 3 — Heavy Vehicle Increment Formula (GVW > 9,000 kg): When GVW exceeds 9,000 kg, the tax calculation applies the base rate up to 9,000 kg (₹165) and assesses ₹25 for every additional 1,000 kg (or part thereof) in excess:

Excess Units = ceil((GVW - 9,000 kg) / 1,000 kg)
Incremental Tax = Excess Units × ₹25.00
Quarterly Tax = ₹165.00 + Incremental Tax

Step 4 — Term Multipliers: Multiply the quarterly figure by 2 for Half-Yearly or 4 for Annual advance tax renewals.

Worked Calculation Example: 10,500 kg Heavy Fire Tender

Vehicle Class: Fire Engine / Fire Tender
Registered GVW: 10,500 kg
Base Slab (up to 9,000 kg): ₹165.00
Excess Weight: 1,500 kg (10,500 kg - 9,000 kg)
1. Excess Increments = ceil(1,500 kg ÷ 1,000 kg) = 2 increments
2. Additional Tax = 2 × ₹25.00 = ₹50.00
3. Total Quarterly Tax = ₹165.00 + ₹50.00 = ₹215.00 / Quarter
4. Annual Payment (4 Quarters) = ₹215.00 × 4 = ₹860.00 / Year

Important Conditions & Statutory Notes

  • Government Exemptions: Vehicles owned and operated by the Government of Kerala Fire & Rescue Services are entitled to statutory exemption under Section 22. Tax liabilities apply to private industrial, airport, and commercial units.
  • Equipment Endorsement: The registration certificate (RC) must specifically indicate vehicle body type as "Fire Engine", "Fire Tender", or "Water Sprinkler" to qualify for Item 9 taxation rather than general goods carriage rates.
  • Advance Remittance: Motor vehicle tax must be remitted prior to the start of the taxation quarter to avoid statutory penalties and arrears interest under Section 12.

Frequently Asked Questions

Statutory guidelines regarding Fire Engine and trailer pump taxation rules.

Schedule I, Item 9 of the Kerala Motor Vehicles Taxation Act specifically governs Fire Engines, Fire Tenders, Mobile Road Water Sprinklers, and auxiliary equipment such as trailer pumps. These vehicles are assessed on their registered Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW).
Vehicles owned and used exclusively by the Kerala Fire and Rescue Services or municipal emergency fleets are generally eligible for statutory exemptions under Section 22 of the Act upon gazette notification. However, units owned and operated by private industrial installations, refineries, port trusts, or airports are subject to regular quarterly taxation under Item 9.
Under the active schedule, vehicles with GVW up to 9,000 kg pay a base quarterly tax of ₹165. For every additional 1,000 kg (or part thereof) in excess of 9,000 kg, an incremental tax of ₹25 per quarter is added to the base rate.
Trailers drawn by fire engines or mounted trailer pumps are taxed independently under Item 9's trailer schedule across 4 weight slabs: up to 1,000 kg (₹30), 1,001–1,500 kg (₹45), 1,501–2,250 kg (₹60), and above 2,250 kg (₹80 per quarter).
Owners can remit tax quarterly (1×), half-yearly (2×), or annually (4×). Advance tax payments for the chosen duration should be remitted before the expiration of the preceding tax validity to prevent statutory interest and arrears under Section 12.
