What This Calculator Does

The Motor Vehicle Tax Arrears Calculator assesses overdue periodic tax liabilities, statutory Additional Tax penalties under Section 12 of the Kerala Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, 1976, and monthly compound delay interest across consecutive defaulted calendar quarters.

Under Kerala motor vehicle tax jurisprudence, operators are granted a statutory 45-day grace period from the start of each calendar quarter. If payment is not remitted within the grace period, graduated Additional Tax penalties and 1% monthly delay interest apply automatically from the day following grace period expiration.

Statutory Penalty & Interest Slabs (Section 12, KMVT Act)

Calculation Methodology & Form G Non-Use Intimation

1. Grace Period Calculation: Each calendar quarter starts on the 1st of the month (e.g., 01/01, 01/04, 01/07, 01/10). The statutory 45-day grace period extends payment without penalty until the 45th calendar day (e.g. 14th of February for Q1).

2. Delay Month Counting: Delay is counted from the day after grace expiration to the assessment date. Any fraction of a month is rounded up to a full month for interest and additional tax determination.

3. Delay Interest Cap: 1% simple interest per month applies only after the initial 6-month buffer, i.e. from Month 7 onward, subject to a statutory maximum ceiling of 100% of the base tax.

4. Form G Non-Use Exemption: Under Section 5 of the Act, if a vehicle was kept non-operational (under garage repair or off the road) for an entire quarter, the owner can submit a Form G prior intimation to the RTO. Ticking Form G for a quarter completely waives the base tax, additional tax, and interest for that period.

Worked Calculation Example: Commercial Truck (4 Months Overdue)

Quarter Base Tax: ₹4,000.00
Grace Period: Expired (45 Days elapsed)
Delay Duration: 4 Months (> 3 and ≤ 6 Months Tier)
Form G Status: Not Claimed
1. Base Quarterly Tax = ₹4,000.00
2. Section 12 Additional Tax (25% tier for 3–6 months overdue) = ₹4,000.00 × 25% = ₹1,000.00
3. Delay Interest (Delay within 6-month buffer; interest begins Month 7) = ₹0.00
4. Total Quarter Arrear Liability = ₹4,000 + ₹1,000 + ₹0 = ₹5,000.00
